一、知识社会语境下西部农村初中英语教学现状
知识社会意味着知识、创新成为社会的核心，知识取代资本、技术、劳动力等基本生产性资料成为占据主导地位的资源，传统劳动者逐渐为新的知识工作者取代。知识社会的目标是培养知识工作者，因此传统的教育教学模式已不能适应知识社会对于人才的需求，知识社会为传统的人才培养模式提出严峻挑战。
在全球知识社会语境下，英语作为世界范围内使用广泛的第一语言，在知识工作者塑造中的工具性作用不言而喻。然而，西部农村初中英语教学却普遍面临教学氛围缺乏、教师权威弱化、城乡教育资源失衡、城乡教育对象差异等难题，教学质量亟待提升。
二、西部农村初中英语教学质量的影响因素分析
1.教学氛围缺乏
相比较城市而言，西部农村初中英语教学氛围缺乏，主要体现在缺乏英语学习氛围，学习的积极性、主动性不高，缺乏语言环境等方面。目前中国社会正处于改革转型的关键期，教育的分层功能弱化，同时伴随着社会市场经济深入发展，就业渠道更加广泛，就业方式更加灵活，教育不再成为改变命运的最佳途径。相反高昂学费形成的巨大经济压力与普遍存在的大学生就业难形成鲜明对比，导致新的读书无用论沉渣泛起。在他们看来，外出打工根本不需要使用英语，因此学生家长和学生个人对英语学习持漠视的态度。更为重要的是，西部农村缺乏英语学习的语言环境。在课堂上，教师无法做到全英教学，且发音不够纯正，严重制约了学生的学习效果。在课外，由于西部农村家长的文化水平较低，根本无法为学生提供必要的辅导。相对于城市而言，西部农村初中英语教学氛围缺乏。
教师权威弱化
在知识社会的今天，教师权威在三个层次上都得到了不同程度的削弱。首先，新课程标准强调学生学习的主体性，在一定程度上削弱的教师的法理权威。其次，西部农村初中的英语教师普遍学历层次较低，知识结构与知识水平较低，视野不够开阔，长期从事农村义务阶段教育，职业倦怠与职业惰性突出，相当数量的英语教师甚至发音不准，造成教师的知识权威大打折扣。更为重要的是，在物欲横流的时代，有偿补课等现象严重损害了教师的形象，降低了教师的人格魅力。不仅如此，西部农村的英语教学仍以传统的“填鸭式教学”为主，一味强调教师的满堂灌，无法与现代教育理念接轨，影响了教师的魅力权威。
2.城乡教育资源失衡
目前我国正处于转型改革的关键期，城乡差距进一步拉大，教育差距尤为明显，究其原因主要反映在城乡教育资源失衡。当前西部农村英语教师普遍存在学历层次较低、结构比例不合理等问题。此外农村英语教师在职称评定、进修培训等方面与城镇教师相去甚远，导致农村英语教师队伍不稳定，流动性较强。此外，在教学资金投入、教学场馆、教学设备等方面，城乡初中差距明显。以多媒体教室为例，农村初级中学基本没有像样的多媒体教室，根本无法组织多媒体教学，致使现代教育技术无法为英语教学服务，而城镇初中均设置有专门的多媒体教室。
3.城乡教学对象差异
农村初中的教学对象以农村留守学生为主。农村留守学生主要表现为隔代监护，隔代监护人普遍文化水平较低，年老力衰，难以尽到监护职责，更不要说学习上的监督和辅导。因此，留守学生在行为习惯上普遍表现较差，严重影响了学习效果。同时相比较城市初中学生而言，农村初中学生接触英语较晚，起点低，底子薄，受师资、语言环境等因素限制学习质量较差。而城镇学生较早接触到英语，有些甚至在幼儿时代就接受各类英语辅导班学习，其语音和语感较好，英语基础更为扎实。城镇学生的英语学习条件也更为优越，能够接触到各类英语报刊、杂志、影像，且家庭更为重视英语学习，往往能够提供电脑等较好的学习条件。此外，城镇学生性格开朗，乐于与人交流，在学习上也更加自信。
三、结语
在知识经济占据主导的今天，英语作为一项重要的沟通手段重要性日益凸显，然而城乡资源配置失衡、教学氛围缺乏等因素极大制约了英语教学质量提升。
西部农村初中必须整合现有各种资源，形成教育合力，才能从根本上解决限制英语教学质量提升的瓶颈。
